Research of Picea abies forests in Nature reserves

The aim is to study protected Picea abies forests and mainly the disturbances in them (windthrows, bark-beetle outbreaks, possibly fires in the past). The studies are supported by project funded nu the Swiss National Science Foundation (please, follow the link) and by the National Scientific Fund (DMU 02/22 2009). A special topic within it, namely the course of self-thinning processes in more-or-less even aged patches, possibly originating from stand-removal disturbances was a part of WSL-SLF (Davos, Switzerland) Project supported by the Velux Foundation. Study sites: "Bistrishko braniste" nature reserve (Vitosha Mountain) and "Parangalitca" Nature Reserve (Rila Mountains).
Tree ring series of Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii Christ) from Pirin mountains in Bulgaria

Aim of this Study is to construct long and highly replicated tree ring chronology from the species, analyze the climate-growth relationships with available climate data and construct a proxy climate record with duration of 800 years or more.

В резултат на мащабни залесявания през 50-те години в България са налични големи по площ култури от един вид. Един от основните използвани видове е бял бор (Pinus sylvestris). В някои от културите се наблюдават здравословни проблеми. Задача на това проучване е да се определят главните стресиращи фактори в такива насаждения. Един от основните използвани методи е дендроекологичния. Проучването е част от докторантската дисертация на Николай Зафиров с научен ръководител доц. Стефан Мирчев (Лесотехнически Университет).
Research of limiting factors at treeline afforestations, Vitosha Mountain

The aim of the study is to determine the influence of strong winds, snow accumulations and extreme climate events (late frosts, unusually cold or dry summers) on the growth of Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce Griseb.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) plantations at the treeline on Vitosha Mountain. It was a part of the PhD research of Eng. Momchil Panayotov with scientific advisor Prof.Yurukov.
